"The
city is a discourse and this discourse is truly a language: the city speaks to
its inhabitants, we speak our city, the city where we are, simply by living in
it, by wandering through it, by looking at it."&#38;nbsp;Roland Barthes

Sampa&#38;nbsp;

SAMPA is an ongoing photographic project focused on the urban form of
São Paulo. São Paulo twice destroyed and reconstructed itself
in the last 150 years, and after World War II experienced voracious growth, becoming
a rich, contradictory and complex metropolis that managed to retain a degree of
formal coherence up until the early sixties. The decades that followed saw a
rapid and continuing erosion of spatial clarity with the massive production of
self-referential buildings, devoid of context.
The ensuing formal and programmatic reductionism pervades architectural
practice in Brazil to this day, and reinforces the incapacity of the state to
adequately mediate the production of space. Thus Brazilians have grown
accustomed to residual and dilapidated public spaces and have in turn
compensated for this by first abandoning, and later internalizing the public
realm, privatizing it within the boundaries of private condominiums.&#38;nbsp; The accelerated economic growth of recent
years has revealed the utter obsolescence of the automobile-centric model of
urban mobility, and calls for urgent and radical solutions and interventions on
multiple fronts. It is in the midst of this mobility crisis that a major
opportunity presents itself for São Paulo to revert its decay, and take
possession of itself, so to speak. Negating the city is no longer possible.

universo do coletivo acabou privatizado, intramuros.

The Gardiner

The Gardiner
Expressway was one of the first projects undertaken by the newly formed
government of Metro Toronto, built in segments from 1955 until 1964. It has
since acted as a major physical barrier between the city and its waterfront,
together with the Railway Lands, a wide rail corridor along the edge of lake
Ontario. Starting in the 1990s, with new large scale redevelopments being
approved by the city for the Railway Lands and the Harbourfront, several
proposals have been made to dismantle or replace the central elevated section.
Lack of municipal funds and political will have repeatedly stalled such plans.
This photographic exercise attempts to show how the structure of the expressway
and the city at a pedestrian level have become more and more intertwined over
time, suggesting new spatial and programmatic opportunities made possible by this
often very interesting “edge condition”.

		<description>BOOK/LIVRO

The Great Drought/A Grande Seca

The Great Drought is a circular, imaginary perambulation through the city of São Paulo, assembled from juxtapositions that reveal a self-devouring city in constant mutation. The book is an exploration into the generic, global city, suspended between its physical presence and its image.

	About me

I was born in Ponta Grossa, Brazil. Moved to Canada in
1981 to study Architecture at the University of Toronto and subsequently worked
for many years as an architect and developer in numerous projects in Brazil,
Canada, Mexico and Malaysia. In 2006 I shifted my focus to photography as a
means to investigate and document space and urban form, in particular the rapid
transformation of urban landscapes on a global scale. In 2015 I published The
Great Drought, a photobook centred on the city of São Paulo and its public
space. I am currently working on a new photobook that has at its starting point
the Peabiru, an ancient network of pre-Columbian Indian routes across Brazil,
Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru.

&#38;nbsp;

Nasci em Ponta Grossa,
Paraná. Me
